The 10th Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA) concluded on Friday in Ecuador with new goals of social justice, aimed at the increasing inclusion of indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants.
At the city of Otavalo, Presidents Rafael Correa, from Ecuador; Hugo Chavez, from Venezuela; and Evo Morales, from Bolivia, and Cuban vice-president Esteban Lazo, signed a final document, which defends the construction of inclusive, culturally diverse and environmentally responsible societies.
Under the title Declaration of Otavalo, the text reiterates the commitment of the ALBA member states in their struggle against the exploitation of human beings, the Telesur network reports.
Likewise, it also validates the concept of multinational state, instituted in the constituent processes of Ecuador and Bolivia, while it also reaffirms it as an expression of unity within diversity.
The commitment of the nations making up the bloc of boosting the Peoples’ Trade Treaties and the construction of an alternative model of economic sovereignty, are also some of the aspects included in the document. It also considers the ALBA’s Bank and Fund as instruments of a new financial architecture.
Likewise, it promotes a Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth within the framework of the United Nations, and ratifies the commitment with the Declaration of the Community of Nations, on the Rights of the Indigenous Peoples and the Durban Program of Action against racism, xenophobia and intolerance.
The State will guarantee social participation and a fair and equitable distribution of benefits and the management, administration and exploitation of non-renewable natural resources, reads the declaration.
On Thursday, representatives from indigenous and Afro-American organizations debated plans for social integration and the recognition of their culture and management of natural resources.
On Friday, the heads of state and heads of delegations from Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica, gathered at the Francisco Paez Coliseum in Otavalo, expressed their positions on regional problems and signed the meeting’s final document.
