Raúl presides at July 26 Commemoration

Under a large banner of Fidel 10,000 Cubans have gathered to mark the 55th anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada garrison, in Santiago and the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes barracks, in the eastern locality of Bayamo.

The rally, presided over by Raul Castro, is taking place at the 26 of July School formally the Moncada military facility. Also attending is Cuba’s First Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, participants of the 1953 attack on the garrison, members of the Granma yacht expedition, and veterans of the Rebel Army.

On July 26, 1953, over one hundred youths led by Fidel staged an armed attack on the Moncada Garrison, in Santiago de Cuba, and on the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes barracks, in the city of Bayamo. The event sparked the last stage of the independence war in Cuba. Five years, five months and five days later the triumph of the Cuban Revolution was proclaimed from Santiago de Cuba.
