Moncada – Fifty Six Years on


Cuban President Raul Castro spoke Sunday during the main activity celebrating the 56th anniversary of the attacks against the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garrisons in the city of Holguin, date which sparked the beginning of the Cuban people´s struggle against the Batista dictatorship.

President Raul Castro spoke after a cultural activity and a brief speech by the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the province of Holguin, Jorge Cuevas Ramos in which he stressed the recovery process underway in that eastern province which was hit hard by Hurricane Ike in 2008.

The Cuban Head of State referred to the advances of the province in the economic and social sectors after the hurricanes that affected the region and other territories of the country. The Cuban President said that the island has complex tasks ahead amidst the world financial crisis and stressed that in the coming days, there will be important meetings of the Council of Ministers, plenary sessions of the Cuban Communist Party and National Assembly sessions in which important national and international issues will be discussed in particular the economic situation in the country that has been affected by the world financial crisis.

The Cuban President continued by stressing that some 125 000 homes were destroyed in the province and half have been recovered so far.

He highlighted the solidarity with Cuba of the religious/solidarity organization Pastors for Peace led by Reverend Lucius Walker who is heading the US-Cuba Friendshipment Caravan and the Vencermos Brigade which is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary.
